Isn't he rapping and telling a story to his friend's daughter, not his own?
The first three verses he is rapping from his friend’s perspective to his friend’s daughter. The final verse is from Cole’s point of view and features dialogue with that friend.
On the opening track of the album, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” the listener is first greeted by the click of a cassette tape entering a player. As Cole reveals in this, the closing track, this project is meant as a parting message from Cole’s departed friend James to his daughter. James tells him to “play this tape for my daughter,” and as the album comes to a close, we’re met with the sound of the cassette finally being ejected from the player, as Cole has fulfilled his slain friend’s wish.

What are the felonies that J. Cole was charged with?
None. The felonies were given to James, a character who Cole takes the perspective of in the first three verses.
This album is told from a perspective other than Cole’s but also has some moments where he is speaking about himself. However, all the writing is original.
In an interview with Complex, Dreamville producer Elite did not confirm that the album is about a specific person at all, he said:
There is another perspective that he is speaking from on this album, and that’s what he wanted to make clear.
In an interview with Jon Caramanica for The New York Times, Cole said the goal of this song and many others on this album were to humanize what media perpetrates as villains.
The people that I know that live that life and come from that life, or even used to live that life, there’s so much more than that. They have multiple sides, and the side that is the strongest is love.

The lead up to the 10-song project was stealthy—fans discovered an iTunes pre-order page for the album last week. Cole followed with the behind-the-scenes mini-doc Eyez, which reveals candid in-studio moments and debuted two controversial songs, “Everybody Dies” and “False Prophets.” The former is believed to diss Lil Yachty, while the latter seems to addresses former idol Kanye West and rap homie Wale. Neither track appears on 4 Your Eyez Only.
Photographer and director Anthony Supreme spoke about shooting the album’s artwork in Atlanta and being drawn to the shot of a young black boy looking up at Cole.

“There are so many different standpoints you can see it from,” Supreme says. “Cole speaking to the youth—this is for your eyes only—for the black youth, and how we all are kids at some point and we really don’t know nothing about the reality that we live in.”
