'I bought the starter set, now what?' Or, how to D&D 5e on a budget.
So young (or older) adventurer, you've decided to buy the starter set of the worlds best role-playing game, or, you're broke but still want to get into this awesome hobby. Well don't worry, because unless you live in an Amish commune, you can start playing Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition FOR FREE. Yes that's right, for the low low price of 0 dollars and 0 cents, you too can pick up a sword and slay some dragons (or 'slay' some dragons I don't judge). Side note if it wasn't obvious already, all the advice presented here applies to the 5th Edition of D&D. If you want to play other editions, well good luck.

Getting Started
In order to play dungeons and dragons, you're going to need a few things. Firstly, the players. Most groups consist of 4-6 players, with one player being the Dungeon Master (henceforth referred to as the DM). Think of the DM as both a referee and a storyteller, because that’s exactly what they are. They’re the one who sets up the game and provides the scenario that the rest of the players (who are “Role Playing” as Player Characters, or PCs) will inevitably destroy explore in wonder and amazement. The player’s meanwhile, will create characters (or use pre generated ones, but I recommend creating your own) that they will then pretend to be. The official guides explain it far better than I could. So, enough prattling on, what does a budding young adventure need to start playing?
Available to download and print FOR FREE, these are the rules for playing a few kinds of characters, along with a basic guide for dungeon masters, some monsters and magic items. Along with pencils and paper, these two documents are the absolute bare minimum needed to play. You also need some Character Sheets and some dice. While you could use online dice rollers (please don’t try and use only the single set from the starter set, everyone needs their own set), you can get giant bags of dice for like 30 bucks at your friendly local game store or online. And… that’s it. Most people will tell you to buy the Player’s Handbook, the Dungeon Master’s Guide and the Monster Manual, but you really don’t need them. More Stuff
Ok, so you may have noticed a significant lack of Options for players in the basic rules, but don’t worry. There are many official sources of additional content, for both Players and DMs:
The Official Goods
The Elemental Evil Player’s Companion. A whole bunch of new races and spells, this official supplement really helps expand the spell options for players.
Aaaaaand that’s it. There really isn’t a whole lot of additional player content for 5e… that’s official.
The Super Secret Good Stuff (don’t tell anyone where you got all this it’s top secret)
The r/UnearthedArcanaCurated Master Ultimate List. Some of the best homebrew content for 5e, this is the best place to go if you want to find high quality content that doesn’t make your wallet sad. A few standouts include the Dark Arts Player's Companion, Sprouting Chaos and The Compendium of Forgotten Secrets.
You may have heard of something called the “DnDWiki”. It is a profane place, and we do not go there. In all seriousness, I (and pretty much everyone else) recommend NOT using anything on there, as it tends to be extremely unbalanced. Like, “I run 20 miles in 6 seconds and punch you into the stratosphere” unbalanced. I would also steer clear of anything on the DMsGuild not made by Matt Mercer. If you’re going to start spending money, get Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. It’s good. Really Good.

General Tips

Just a few rapid fire things that’ll help you git gud:
Use Standard Array for your first character. Point Buy tends to hinder new players rather than help them (and honestly it doesn’t help them in the slightest), and Rolling for stats can create resentment from new players who didn’t roll very well.

Read. Read, Read & Read some more. Don’t just skim your class features, read them carefully. You don’t have to memorize them, but take the time to know what you can do. It’ll help the game go smoother, and you’ll enjoy it more.
Try and make an original character. It might be tempting to play your favorite character from [insert media here], and while it’s a-ok to draw inspiration, give them some sort of twist and make them your own. Also, try not to use the same name as the character you’re taking inspiration from. There are tons of random name generators out there if you need help.
Have a decent constitution. I cannot stress this enough, have a good constitution. Seriously, even a 13 is good. There is nothing more frustrating and unfun then being reduced to 0 hp and just lying there doing nothing while watching everyone else play the game.

In a similar vein, be good at what your class is supposed to do. If you’re a Bard, have good Charisma. If you’re a Cleric, have good wisdom. If you’re a Wizard, have good Intelligence. If you want to play a Spellcaster with low intelligence, play a sorcerer. If you want to play a musician that’s terrible, play a rogue with the entertainer background.

Have Fun. That’s the most important part. Even if you forget half the rules, even if you’re playing an “unoptimal” character, so long as everyone at the table is enjoying the time they’re spending together, you’re playing D&D right.
